Watch this film about Magdalenas view on Yin Yoga!
Magdalena Mecweld is the author of the popular book “Serenity Yinyoga – Rest yourself to healthy body and a calm mind” (LUX) Read more about the book here.
She has a non-sectarian approach to yoga and meditation. Magdalena has practiced meditation for more then 20 years, and has received instructions from many of the leading Buddhist meditation teachers (such as S.N Goenka, Sayadaw U Tejaniya, Joseph Goldstein and Gil Fronsdal among others). Every year she deepens her own practice on longer and shorter retreats with mainly Sayadaw U Tejaniya but also other teachers around the world.
From her early teens Magdalena has been fascinated about the questions why we live, why we suffer, why we die? Since then she has inquired among many different techniques, teachers, teachings and spiritual maps to get some answers to these questions. A young single mom, raising her daughter on her own while studying Journalism & Socialanthropology and working part time has been one way of “weakening the “ego” and strengthening the self-discipline. At the same time Magdalena has also been working as an professional astrologer deepening her knowledge in the spiritual parts of life, reading and investigating different maps of mysticism; buddhism, sufism and hinduism as well as western philosophy. In 2000 she met a yoga-teacher and included her body in the quest (starting a daily asana-practice). In spite of an injured back and severe chronic pain (3 infused vertebras) from a accident and a hyper thyroid disease (Graves disease) she continued to deepen her study of the mind/body relation. The answers to her questions came when she finally immersed herself in the Buddha-Dharma and started a daily meditation practice in 2004. In 2006 she was considered free of Graves and has since then not experienced any symptoms. Also her back is healed and she has for many years not experienced any pain. It is the awareness practice (mindfulness) that is her mostly used tool in both her own practice and teachings.
Although she now uses Buddhas teachings as her main map on the journey she is still curious and open to new teachings and answers.
Magdalena has International Certificates in Classical Hatha Yoga (Bihar School of yoga, Vashishta Institute Saji P.K), Yin yoga, Restorative as well as Ashtanga Yoga.
Her main yoga-teachers are Norman Blair, Saji Pk, Sarah Powers, Judith Lasater, Sharath Jois, Kristina Karitinou Ireland, Petri Räisänen and Laruga Glaser among others. Since many years it is Yin yoga that has been her main teaching style and she is among the first ones teaching it in Scandinavia. Magdalena is also the leading teacher of “Yin yoga Intensives” in Scandinavia and has certified hundreds of new Yin yoga teachers.
Magdalena’s ability to weave together physical yoga asana and awarness practice in a simple yet profound way makes her classes emotionally, mentally and physically rewarding. She is known for her warmth and her easy and humorous teaching style.
She has a BA degree in Social anthropology and History of Ideas. For many years Magdalena has also worked as an established journalist in Swedish media, mostly for the leading newspaper Svenska Dagbladet where she was writing about health and travel (see her articles here). Since some years her time is fully focused on yoga and meditation.
She has an adult daughter and lives with her partner Mats in Stockholm, Sweden. Both Magdalena and Mats are board members of the Vipassanagruppen, Sweden that invites many competent meditation teachers to Sweden.
“I see life as a meditation and retreat, always trying to be aware of all of life’s events. It is not what happens on the yogamat or meditation-cusion that is interesting, it is what happens when life presses, stressing us, when things are not the way we want them, or when they actually are.”
Mats Nielsen has practiced vipassana meditation for many years with many international teachers around the world. He has a certificate in hatha yoga (RYT). Together with Magdalena he teaches Yinyoga-workshops and teacher -trainings. Mats main teaching tool is awareness meditation (Mindfulness). He has a background as an event-manager.
